Background:

The original AIDS Memorial Quilt was conceived in the US in 1985 by activist Cleve Jones and continues to serve as a powerful memorial to those who have died from AIDS-related causes — symbolising the impact of the epidemic on the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

Since then, AIDS quilts have appeared around the world in many beautiful forms. We last made one in Hull in 2005, marking 20 years since the original quilt. Now, another 20 years on, it feels fitting to create a new one — to raise awareness, end stigma, and share the love of the amazing community who have both been affected by and supported those living with HIV and AIDS.

Cornerhouse began life as the community group AIDS Action, formally registering as a charity in 1988. While our work looks different today, our values, ethos and pride are rooted in those beginnings.

If you’re not feeling crafty but would like to show your support for World AIDS  Day we also have a range of red ribbon charity t-shirt and other items available which supports our work. You can find here Red Ribbon | We Are Cornerhouse Apparel
